Plan Your Visit

Tips and insights for making the most of your time in Joshua Tree.

Weather & Seasons

Joshua Tree shines in spring and fall, when mild days are ideal for hiking, climbing, and watching wildflowers bloom across the desert floor. Summers are dangerously hot, often topping 100°F with little shade, so carry far more water than you think you need. Winters bring sunny, mild days and cold nights, with occasional light snow dusting the higher elevations around Keys View and Ryan Mountain.

Getting There

Joshua Tree National Park sits in Southern California's High Desert, about 2.5 hours east of Los Angeles and roughly an hour from Palm Springs. The west entrance is at the artist town of Joshua Tree, the north entrance and park headquarters are at Twentynine Palms, and the south entrance at Cottonwood comes off Interstate 10. There is no park shuttle, so plan to drive Park Boulevard and the scenic roads yourself.

Best Time to Visit

March through May is the prime season, with mild temperatures and spring wildflowers, while October and November bring excellent fall weather. Book lodging in Joshua Tree, Twentynine Palms, or Yucca Valley early for these months. Avoid the dangerous summer heat, and consider winter for sunny, quiet days — just pack for cold nights and the park's famously dark, star-filled skies.
